8-Aminopyrene-1,3,6-trisulfonic acid trisodium salt (often abbreviated as APTS) is a highly water-soluble, anionic fluorescent dye, which is primarily used as a sensitive labeling reagent in carbohydrate and glycoprotein analysis. Due to its high negative charge (as a resultf of it`s three sulfonic acid groups and a reactive primary amine, it is exceptionally well-suited for the derivatization of reducing sugars via reductive amination.
The Key Scientific applications of APTS are
- Carbohydrate Electrophoresis: APTS is the industry standard for labeling glycans, oligosaccharides, and human milk sugars for analysis via Capillary Gel Electrophoresis with Laser-Induced Fluorescence (CGE-LIF). It`s triple-negative charge provides high electrophoretic mobility and excellent separation resolution.
- Glucose Sensing: It serves as a fluorescent reporter in two-component sensing systems (often paired with viologen-type quenchers) for continuous glucose monitoring, where its fluorescence is restored upon glucose binding.
- Biomolecule Labeling: APTS is used to modify various carbonyl-containing biomolecules, including aldehydes and ketones, and to label glycoproteins for detection in complex biological matrices.
- Medical Research: It is utilized in diagnostic assay manufacturing and research involving glycan biomarkers for diseases such as multiple myeloma.
